It rappresents a tipycal species of the lower water of the salt
lagoon, of the paddy field and of the "macine". From April to
September, you can see it frequently. This bird is a little bigger than
blackbird, and the main caracteristics are: the slim and black
beak, the very long coral red legs and black and white plumage. During the
winter, the male is completely white,except the top of the head which is dark gray
while the inferior parts are white-pink (see photo). The female is like the male during the
winter, but its nape is white; the iris is pink.
It feeds on shellfishes, aquatic insects, little fishes, amphibiouses.
Female lays 4 eggs which sits on both parents for 24/26 days: the little birds are covered with small feathers and
they desert the nest when they are 1 month old.
