The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a beautiful bird of the humid
land which belongs to Kingfisher's family. It doesn't run very well
and it is a clumsy climber too. its only secret is the patience on which
wait the prey. Its name belongs from the typical technology thanks to it
hunts: it lies in ambush on branches on watercourse for a long time
since it sees the fish like a little sword, so it plunges into the water
to catch it. It often stays in surplace on water (a typical position called
"Holy Ghost"). It is 16 cm. long and its feathers are very
coloured: on back it is blue with metal effect, its throat
and its neck are white, while chest, side and crupper
are red. Respect for body, its head is big.
Both sex bore tunnel (since 1 m.) inside the embankments,
in which female will lie 6-7 white eggs.
During the year, female makes two broods.
The little birds born with their feathers in sheath of wax which fall
when they loose the nest. Parents feed the little birds using the
same order of distribution.
